A lot of terrible things have happened in the last decade, and given world events probably in the last 10 minutes, but one bright spot is the killer return of Aly & AJ. Having hooked up with a new team of producers and collaborators, the pair rediscovered their love of music and the results are pretty stunning.
“Take Me”, their first track in ten years, is a shimmering jam - resplendent with vocals rich with longing and zeitgeist-capturing synths. It's a brilliantly catchy statement of intent and a sign that Aly & AJ are back and here to conquer.
The track is something of a sonic shift for the duo, gone is the paint-by-numbers sheen that characterised a plethora of ‘00s artists and now replaced with something much more real, truer to themselves. AJ explains: “That’s not who we are - we were uncertain that we’d even be heard among the masses - we just weren’t writing that kind of music. We felt like, what’s the point?”.
“People have been wondering what took so long - and it sounds horrible - but music became an enemy to be honest. We were scared to write, we didn’t like what was coming out of our instruments - it felt like we weren’t going anywhere,” adds Aly.
Fingers crossed we’re not waiting another 10 years.
