Rina Sawayama, London-based model, singer, producer and creative, is out here making pop music that’s about 20 years ahead of the rest of the pack. Her latest track, the propulsive “Alterlife”, was inspired by the racing game soundtracks of F-Zero X and Gran Turismo. It’s DIY pop but rather than rough around the edges it’s as if NASA engineers had been tasked with building a garden shed, the end result is spectacular.
"'Alterlife' is about finding yourself through trying to become other people", she said to FADER. "Everyone tries to conform to what other people think but part of growing up is being able to create your own path."
Rina Sawayama plays The Pickle Factory on 2 November.
