MAAD is a pop polymath – singer-songwriter, model and DJ, she’s an intimidatingly talented tour de force. Having first charmed us “Sweet & Low”, she’s back and dropped the ferocious visuals for “Black Ice”. The track, an addictive collision of old school funk and R&B, is powerful statement of intent from a future star. We talked to MAAD about what inspires her and what we can expect next.
Tracks like “Black Ice” and “Sweet & Low” have elements of disco and old school R&B – what artists have shaped your sound?
I’m inspired a lot by the 70s & 80s, Diana Ross, Donna Summer & Michael Jackson are just few artists I really admire. My producer TheVamp helped me take what inspired me and made it my own.
You’ve written and collaborated with a ton of great performers, what made you want to step out in front and go solo?
Essentially I've always been a solo artist, but I feel collaborations are so important throughout anybody's journey as they play such a key part in evolving and stepping out of your comfort zone. For me, collaborations really help you to perfect your craft and be a stronger artist.
As a musician and model you know more than most about the relationship between music and fashion. How important is visual presentation to you?
The visuals are so important to me! I’m blessed to know a lot of really talented creatives who also have a vision and are open to working with me on my ideas. Usually the visuals start from the studio while I’m writing the records & then everything else starts to come to life.
You’re also a DJ, what song do you put on when you need to fill a floor?
I find it’s often not a particular song more than it is a sound. A lot of people love trap right now so that can really get the crowd going and onto the dance floor. Although it depends on the party or event I’m spinning at, so I would tend to spin accordingly.
Your debut EP Lé Funk drops in September – what can we expect from it?
Yes! I’m really excited to release this project. You can expect a fresh retro sound. The records are fun & groovy!!
“Black Ice” is available to buy and stream now on iTunes, Spotify and all other digital platforms. MAAD’S debut EP Lé Funk will be released in September.
