Despite being just 21, Molly Kate Kestner has already enjoyed the kind of success it would take most of us a lifetime to achieve – and she’s just getting started.
“His Daughter”, a song she wrote in High School, picked up over 1.5 million views in less than two weeks and since then she’s written a sting of killer tracks for herself as well as writing for artists like Kelly Clarkson and Wiz Khalifa. In between all of this she managed to find time this year to hit the road with Wrabel.
Her music is a powerhouse combo of breathtaking vocals and lyrics that probe deeper than your average popstar. With seemingly endless talent, Molly Kate Kestner is here to stay, upping the ante with every release.
Take a listen to “Compromise” below and get to know Molly a little bit better.
Seems like you've been crazy busy this year, what have you been up to?
Lots of writing & recording! I've put out 4 singles just in 2017. I went on my first tour with Wrabel in the spring & I'm heading out again this fall with Phoebe Ryan! But even outside of touring, I've travelled quite a bit around the states which has kept me quite busy.
You were in high school when everyone went nuts for your debut "His Daughter", what was that like?
Honestly.... so overwhelming. I didn't even know how to parallel park let alone deal with millions of people reacting to a video I had put up to share with my family & friends. Don't get me wrong, it was really an incredible experience. But man, let's just say I didn't do as well on my finals as I thought I would.
How would you describe recent single ‘I Don’t Know' to the uninitiated?
"I Don't Know" is basically the exact words I would say to my husband if he did something that made me mad. There's nothing I hate more than confrontation. I wish people could just read minds... unfortunately, I'm stuck saying things like “I don't know" and "forget about it.” Who's with me?
Could you ever imagine doing anything other than performing?
Absolutely! Although I've always had a pretty good imagination. But there are just so many things I love. I could imagine myself teaching or counselling middle schoolers, motivational speaking, writing children's books, starting my own non-profit, voice acting in a Disney movie! Who knows though, maybe I'll do some of those things in my lifetime. For now, performing these songs I write & meeting the people who listen to them makes me very happy.
Growing up, who were your biggest influences?
Julie Andrews. Whitney Houston. Ella Fitzgerald. Basically strong, classy, talented women. Those were my icons.
You've written for a ton of great artists, who do you dream of working with?
I would love to work with Adele, she is such an inspiration to me because she is a true example of succeeding in the music industry while remaining true to oneself. She is real, strong, classy, and talented...see where I'm going here?
What was the last record you really loved?
I truly love Ed Sheeran's newest record. Fresh, dynamic & inspiring.
What's next for you?
I've got some music coming out for my artist project. I've got music coming out with Kelly Clarkson that I'm very excited about! I'm playing more shows & basically just doing what I can to spread the songs I wanna share with the world.
