As a statement of intent, it doesn’t get much better than One Bit’s most recent single “My Way”. Featuring the vocals of the soon-to-be world conquering Noah Cyrus, “My Way” is a brassy, bold floorfiller that signals the production duo’s rapid ascent.
One Bit (comprised of Jonty Howard and Joe Murphy) have also been responsible for string of monster remixes for the likes of Vance Joy and Catchment while their remix of Confessionals “Love is King” has picked up almost 600,000 YouTube hits in eight short weeks.
Take a listen to “My Way” and acquaint yourself with One Bit.
What’s your origin story? How did One Bit come into being?
We’ve always been into music, from a really young age we were playing in bands, orchestras, choirs - the whole lot really! We met at Uni in Liverpool while we were studying music production and started collaborating on a bunch of recording projects in our spare time, this then led onto us starting a studio together when we graduated. One Bit kind of started by accident! We just started popping a bunch of the music that we were writing online and it grew from there!
How would you describe your sound?
Hooky, bassy, fun, quirky dance music that doesn’t take itself too seriously and occasionally gets a bit heavy!
Who are your biggest inspirations?
Our musical backgrounds are ridiculously varied so it’s quite a difficult question for us to answer, but we’ll try our best….There’s the more obvious One Bit inspiration in artists like Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada & Mint Royale … which leads onto the more DJ inspired Foamo, Feed Me & Lee Mortimer.Joe used to be really into his rock & metal so it only seems right to include System Of A Down and Killswitch Engage, where Jonty grew up on a lot of his Dad’s old music – artists like BB King & Eric Clapton.
You’ve played festivals like T in the Park and Boardmasters, what can people expect from your live shows if they haven’t seen you before?
We like to play a lot of our own material, remixes/bootlegs and things we’ve been playing around with in the studio, you’ll also often find us with a bunch of extra little toys and gadgets on stage to keep things interesting.
The response to “My Way” was pretty massive, how’s it been since the track was released?
It’s been emotional!! It definitely feels very fresh still so I’m sure there’s a bunch of stuff still for us to process, but the overall reaction across the board has exceeded anything we could have asked for! We’re just crazy excited to have this track out there and for it to be receiving so much love and support is incredible.
How did the Noah Cyrus collab come about, anymore in the pipeline?
We first came across her when she released “Make Me(Cry)” and thought her vocals were killer. From there we just went with the ‘don’t ask don’t get’ approach and it seems to have panned out pretty well for us!! Regarding what’s in the pipeline… well… We’re endlessly writing away, it definitely feels like were only just getting started, so 2018’s looking pretty fun from this side of the table!
“My Way” is released via Ministry of Sound, what is it like is to have a record out on such an iconic label
It feels great to have an amazing team behind us with such an iconic heritage, we’ve got a lot of love for the guys and girls over at Ministry and massively appreciate all the belief and support that they have in us.
”My Way” is out now.
