Ukiyo, aka 20-year-old Australian multi-instrumentalist and producer Timothy Arnott, serves up the good vibes we’re all desperately needing. Blending hip-hop, dance, and elements of classical, Ukiyo creates sun-drenched electronica capable of transporting you far from these gloomy climes.
The producer recently teamed up with “Your Girl Pho” for the beat-laden “Calling” which is out now.
Your most recent track is “Calling”, what’s it about?
I wanted to encapsulate the feeling of being the one putting in the work in all those one sided friendships and relationships that are way too common. For me personally it was a huge stepping stone in making music, my music at the time wasn't really going anywhere and I was doing it for the wrong reasons. I really had fun making Calling.
How would you describe your sound?
I find it hard to describe my sound but I take pride in that cause I feel like it means I'm doing something a bit different. Essentially Ukiyo is about clean sounds and simple melodies over a beat that you could play on a drum kit.
You’re a multi-instrumentalist so where do you start when you’re writing a track?
It changed a lot, usually it'll be a piano or some kind of instrument trying to find something interesting. Other times it'll be a cool sample or something I've found that'll get the creative juices flowing.
What was the last record you heard that you really loved?
I've been really getting into "What's a Girl to Do" by Fatima Yamaha, I think it's an old track from a year or two ago but I only heard it a few weeks back and I love the punch it carries with so little going on.
You release music under a moniker, is there something freeing about not putting stuff out under your own name?
I've nearly always released music under different names, definitely when you're starting out it's a nice way to keep it away from your mates and stuff. When I first begun releasing stuff as Ukiyo only a handful of people knew it was me.
What’s next for you?
We'll see! I've got so many tracks that are 95% done and others that I've had to physically hold myself back from uploading already. Can't wait for people to hear the next chapter of Ukiyo.
