Israeli singer and producer Yotam Mahler has released “Birthday Wishes”, the second single from his debut EP What is your Art? Yotam cites classical and gospel as his two main influences while growing up and this is reflected in his own take on electronica with elements of 90s soul blended with opulent string arrangements.
Yotam, who is half Israeli and half Danish, grew up in a secular collective community says of his musical journey:
“As a young kid, I remember watching the movie 'Sister Act' with Lauryn Hill; I was inspired by the gospel music so deeply that my father had to remind me that we are Jewish. Nine years ago, I had a gig in a liberal, pluralistic synagogue in Tel-Aviv that strives to redefine the Jewish-Israeli identity of the secular Israeli public. I felt strongly drawn to the music and ideas, and found a way to connect with my roots. Since then I have become the synagogue's music director and pianist. Every year, we tour in New York, and I always sneak in to a Harlem Sunday Gospel Fest.”
There is attentiveness to his work that shines through and a demonstrable understanding of musical history that helps make his output so rich while keeping his production fresh.
What is your Art? will be released in the autumn.
